In January 2015, John Harder plead guilty to one felony count of mail fraud and one felony count of money laundering in Portland, Oregon. He allegedly lied to more than 50 investors in order to obtain $5 million between late 2007 and February 2008. He was the controller of Sunwest Management, a nationwide collection of assisted living facilities. Harder promised investors that their money would go towards specific facilities, when instead, the money went toward his personal expenses and the business expenses of other Sunwest entities. In May 2015, during his trial, prosecutors discovered that he defrauded more than 1,000 investors to the tune of at least $120 million. He was allegedly supporting his lifestyle and Sunwest’s through laundering investor money. The company was losing millions since 2006. Harder was sentenced to 15 years in prison in mid-November.
